Capt. Ankit

As a Son of AirIndia Captain I was always surrounded by Airplanes, My  Story seeks out the special few who have answered the call of the skies, proud to be counted among those with the discipline, aptitude, and courage to become Pilot.

Life in hangars and homes, at Airport restaurants and on ramps, My Story
tells the story of Flight in the words of Pilot. What it means to Fly
An Airplane all alone for the first time on 1st Solo. What it means to Fly an Airplane for the last time. The easy rapport one can have with a person who is a complete stranger but just by sharing experience of Flying.

And the excitement that consumes Pilots at the opportunity to share this world
of Aviation with non-Pilots, Airport communities, community leaders, and anyone
else who will listen a born Pilot.

My Story is a saga for anyone who has sat all alone in an Aircraft, firewalled
the throttle, charged down the runway, and rotated. And especially for those
Who might if given the chance.

For most people,
the Sky is the limit.
For a Pilot,
the Sky is Home and
Airplane is Office.

This is the Story of the Journey home. A Pilot's Story.

I am a Pilot

When I was young, I never even imagined that someday I would simply be mad
about Aircrafts and Flying. On my third birthday my dad asked me “what kind of Birthday cake you want” ?

My answer was so oblivious an Airplane Shaped Cake.

On my trip abroad, to Singapore, I bought the Observer's Book of Aircraft by William Green, this changed my world completely. It had all the different kinds of Aircrafts one could see at that time with their full specifications. The Book increased my vocabulary, I got to know technical details of various Aircrafts, their type, seating, power plant, cruising speed, armament, country of origin, dimensions, service ceiling, endurance, range, etc.

Soon I was nicknamed Pilot by my friends, whenever they used to see any Aircraft,
they used to enquire about it from me. I started to correctly recognize even the
Aircrafts which were Flying at very high altitudes. Even my ears got Trained for the slightest sound  which resembled the drone of an Aircraft engine. I could tell well in advance that whether the approaching Aircraft was a piston engine, a turboprop,  a Jet or a Chopper.

Just a single book changed my whole life, I became an Aviation enthusiast. Soon I
started to buy all the good books related to Aviation I could lay my hands on. By the time I reached the age of 18 years, that is the time I finished my schooling, I had a library, full of Books on Aircrafts and other related fields.

After passing my Schooling, the very next day my dad took me to the office
of the local Banglore Flying club and enrolled me as a Student Pilot.

Within 14 months of my joining or after exactly 15 Hrs of Flying hrs on Pushpak MKI and Cessna 150 Airplane VT MPF, I was ready to go solo, all alone, no one would accompany me, it would be just me and my Cessna 152 Airplane.

Gliding, Flying free, like a Bird. I readied for the Flight, checked the elevator, Ailerons, rudder and Airbrakes, they were all working, checked the altimeter, variometer, slip-skid indicator, Pitot tube, Speedometer, they all seemed well.  Wow I am a Captain [ Commanding and Piloting Aviator In Navigation ] now.

Now I could call myself a Pilot, a real AVIATOR

But actual problem started after my 1st Solo. Now this is the time I realise why
every Indian Pilot hates DGCA and Indian Officials. Now I was getting my Flights
once a week or twice a month, amplifying my frustration. After waiting for 17 months I got my Indian Private Pilot Certificate. Then I decided to continue my Training in USA.

Land in America

Capt Richard had tough time to get me back on right Flying, because of my different style and methods I had adopted while my Training in India.  Every day I was learning many new terms of Flying. James Golfin [ Jimmy ] was my Flight Instructor. Jimmy was a very cool Pilot so I was bit relaxed to learn Flying.

When I came back to India, we had no jobs available here, so again headed to my old Flying Club to join as Assistent Pilot Instructor under the same CFI. It became very difficult for me to cope with

Indian Flying style as it seemed very old fashioned.  Adjusting with Indian Flying culture I started teaching  Pilots in Indo - US style.  I was not at all happy with the culture but had no option, my frustration was increasing with every passing day.  But by seeing logbook getting hrs day by day ,  I started preparation for  ATPL and did cleared all my papers as well. Still I had about 1200Hrs, only 300hrs more to get an ATPL license.  Aviation is not so much a profession or a hobby as it is a disease.

Air India released advertisement for Trainee Co-Pilot for Boeing 737 Aircraft. I applied and left my API Job to prepare for my Air India exam.  Air India declared result after 9 months and by default I got no 1 position. Thanks to my wonderful US Flying Experience and awful Indian Assistent Flight Instructor's Experience. I always told my student Pilot, Learn from the mistakes of others -- you won't live long enough to make all of them yourself.  But they were not much ready to listen me.

I met another Pilot Captain Reenamita Jain [ Reena ] at DGCA office. I was stunned to see her exceptionally fair and pretty face . Though she looked sad. I felt a strong desire to talk to her. After starting a conversation I came to know that she has come for her Conversion from Canadian CPL into Indian DGCA CPL.She was trying to get it since last 4 months but all in vain. I helped her to get her license within 7 days with all formalities done. Of course that cost us only couple of bucks before we could get CPL in hand, but that was the culture Indian DGCA had. Reena was so happy with her Pilot's License in hand, as she had lost all her hopes
before. She got very happy and excited and kissed me in DGCA office itself.

To celebrate this, I Invited  Captain Reenamita [ Reena ] at Hotel Taj for Candle
light dinner,  we both were so eager that both of us reached Taj almost an hour before our schedule time. I proposed  Captain Reenamita just after the dinner, which  Reena accepted immediately. This was most happening day for us and we both were in cloud nine.

Time flown very fast and it was time for Reena to get back to Canada, as her whole family lives in Canada, even she was born and brought up in Canada.  Her Dad had a small Flight school and a Air Charter Services at a Monatoba, north Canada,  which was not doing well due heavy recession in Aviation. Captain Reenamita, was a CFI there but she wanted to Fly for an Airlines, which was bit difficult in Canada due to recession, So she decided to get her Indian CPL.

AirIndia was suffering from heavy losses, So they cancelled further expansion plans and so no more hiring for Trainee Co-Pilot for Boeing 737 Aircraft.  I wanted 300 more Flying hours before I could apply for issue of Indian ATPL. So I decided to join one Indian Company Air Assam based out of Guwahati to Fly their King Air B 200.  Though was paid peanuts.

I join to get Flying hours. Was Flying with Wg. Cdr. Aman Sing who was an ex Air force Pilot,  No civil Aviation or International Aviation Exposure, but had a solid defense attitude problem like any other defense Pilot.  As soon as I got my 1510 hrs on the Logbook I left this job and reached again Indian DGCA with lot of documents and lot of bucks to be paid as and when required.  At any cost I wanted to get my ATPL issued asap. Met with Mr Rajan again who was the same tout at  DGCA who helped   Captain Reenamita  to get her Indian CPL. I paid him big amount then
usual bribe and  Rajan promised me to get my work in next 7 days. These
7 days were like 7 years for me. The only relief I had was skype and Black berry
calls of Captain Reenamita [ Reena ] as she was the only soul on the earth who could understand my situation.

Monday sharp 1000 hrs I was at DGCA looking for Mr Rajan, but he was not there till
1030, I made a call to him on his mobile which was coming switched off  and No reply at home landline, so I  reached DGCA reception, but my documents were not there. Receptionist was not ready to listen to me. I paid him big bucks, to get him ready to hear me.  After taking big bribe he opened his mouth and inform me that no file is there in Indian DGCA office even.  At 1300 hrs Rajan picked up his mobile phone and informed me that he is in Banglore due some important work and DGCA
has rejected his ATPL application as he needs minimum 1000hrs as PIC to get his ATPL issued. And if he needs his papers back he would needs to pay high sum of money to another DGCA agent Mr Kuldeep.I paid and got my original documents back. I thought At least I have  live Indian CPL in hand.

I felt very depressed and helpless with the situation,  Captain Reenamita invited me  at her Flight school to get Canadian ATPL. I immediately accepted the offer and made myself busy in doing all the preparation to reach Canada. Once completed with formalities I flown to Monterial with my Dad Captain Ravi who was in operation of same sector on Boeing 747.

In the Flight to Canada I was undergoing mix emotions of fear and excitement.  Yet, managed to keep my mind focused and kept reminding myself that whatever is happening in my life is happening for good.

All my worries vanished as I saw Captain Reenamita holding a board with the title “Captain Champ” written in it. Champ is what she calls me with love. I embraced her and realizing my father’s presence controlled my emotions. We went straight to her house. After food and taking rest, we headed to the Flying club.

I liked the place the moment we entered the Flying club.

The big hall was flooded with Aircraft models. Charts, poster and moreover spacious hall.

When I saw the fleet of Aircraft, I felt as if I got back to life.

I was overjoyed and was thrilled to revive my previous Training days.

I was introduced with Bob, who will be my new Flight Instructor. Because of high spirit and enthusiasm My Training went really at good pace with my stunning performance. In few weeks I felt as if I have become a new person with energy, focus and happiness. Flying became part of me. Moreover company of Reenamita added further wings. I was totally in love with her. We started remaining together for
most of the time. I was free to express my affection for her.

She took me to all the exotic places of the city.

Initially I was shy as to show my affection to her in public. But she being rather bold never missed a chance to hug me, kiss me or rather dance in my arms in public. Her open affection made me also comfortable and we use to cuddle each other quite often in public. She soon became a non detachable part of me. It was not just her beauty, but her heart, understanding and love for Aircraft which made me
crazy for her.Soon I got my ATPL issued in Canada. I was given offer of being Flight instructor there , I gave required exams  and started working there. Even with less number of students we were doing good. Later through an old friend of mine I heard about “Mission to Canada” campaign started by Canadian government. They had an amazing vision of providing low cost, but high standard Training.
Strictly following ATAC (Air Transport Association of Canada) , I was impressed by their plans, and made  an appointment and fixed our Flying Club under them. It was through their wonderful planning that we could receive good number of students
from India. Our students were happy as well with the timely and quality Training provided. Thanks to my previous experience in India I was able to understand their urgency and mindset.

Reena’s father  Captain Robin Jain was the owner of the Ottawa Flying Club. He was very happy with the development that his club made. Reading our mind and seeing us happy together he himself initiated and offered me proposal of wedding with Reena.

I was Overjoyed.

I gave the news to my parents and they were joyous as well.

Having a person who understands you so well as a life partner was a present by god.
My parents wanted us to get married in India with full traditional style. Though Reena had this wired fantasy of getting married in Air!! I came up with best planning. I said WILCO to both. Yes, we actually got married

Twice ! Although I m so happy now when I look back and recall our experiences.

Firstly we were married in Indian style. All Reena’s relatives and friends joined us in India and we had a Beautiful and rather vibrant marriage.

Here in India wedding is a gigantic affAir. All immense colourful events and customs with Indian ethical wear did made us feel like King and Queen.
We both thoroughly enjoyed our wedding. Beside watching Reena and her realtives in Indian attire was a pleasure to eyes.

After lengthy list of rituals and ceremonies in India and abundant of food , love and blessing we left back to Canada.

And yes this was the time to do the crazy thing.

Well we did not exactly got married in Air, actually we decorated the entire hanger and the ceremony was conducted there with our guest sitting right in front of us, our common favorite Aircraft PA-38 , Seneca was kept right behind us, beautifully decorated and yes we got married there , and Reena Was in beautiful white gown beating any Hollywood actress.

But to keep Reena happy , our first kiss after marriage was kept for Flight in Seneca, thanks to Auto Pilot in the instrument panel.

Today after four years we run Two Flying clubs which are doing great comprising of our own hand picked Aircraft fleet and master Trainers.I and Reena are always happy and bubbly and if anybody ask the Secret we tell them that we are always surrounded with something we are both passionate about.

We don’t work but rather we Fly !

Within all of Us is a Varying Amount
of Space Lint and Star Dust
The Residue from Our Creation.
Most are Too Busy to Notice it
and it is Stronger in Some than Others
It is Strongest in those of us
Who Fly and is responsible for
an unconscious, subtle desire
to slip into some wings
and try for the Elusive Boundaries

Captain Imran Khan

Pilot  : Captain Imran Khan
Wife   : Hurefa
Kid    : Ranil
Places : Banglore India
Bengaluru International Airport
         Colombo Sri Lanka
Airlines : Air Lanka [ Now Srilankan ]
Flight School :  Asian School of  Aviation.
Chief Flight Instructor [ CFI ] : Captain Ravi Silva
                                  ATPL from Europe
Aircraft : Boeing B 747

12 October 1995

I board my 1st ever International Flight all alone from Banglore to  Colombo AirLanka [ Now Srilankan ] Flight No # UL 342 with an aim to be an Airline Pilot.

I used to be a frequent Flyer with dad and mom but never flew alone on International sectors,  though I flown all alone many a times on domestic routes. Wearing blue Reebok T shirt n black Pepe jeans with Nike my favourate shoes. I was Bit nurvous and too much entho about being a future Airline Pilot. I could see only Airbus 340 and Boeing 747 in my Dream.

I kept my Admission letter of Asia's best and most reputed Flight school Asian School of  Aviation.  I was awaiting for an Air hostess to ask me " where are you going" so I can show her my letter  and make her impress. So she can take better care of mine. It did not happend and I landed at Colombo Internatonal Airport Runway 27.

Welcome to Colombo Internatonal Airport Cabin crew annouced and we slowly started  deboarding the plane.

Colombo Airport

Welcome to Asian School of Aviation I saw a person at Arrival with my  name  play card IMRAN KHAN from India.  It was so proud to see such card of my own name at Airport. I immidiately hoped in to Academy's Toyota Ace Van  and drove down to all the way south of Colombo city Mt Lavinia . I was browsing through all nice  places of this paradise Iceland. Mount Lavinia a typical tourist city of Srilanka where  you get 75% White and only 25% locals. It was an amazing experience all together.

I started my Ground classes for Student Pilot Licence [ SPL ]. with other fellow Pilots from all over, Captain Namal was my 1st ground Instructor, very young Pilot but full of Aviation knowledge and amazingly good with communication. Captain Ravi Silva our Chief Flight Instructor [ CFI ] an ATPL from Europe and Type rated on Boeing 747 from  USA had an amazing command was the owner of this Academy too. Academy has two divisions "Air Cabs" Air Taxi Charter  & Cargo and Flight Training.

I started my Flying lessions for Private Pilot Licence [ PPL ]. with other fellow Pilots Captain Sanjiva was my Flight Instructor, very Deshing and stylish young FAA trained   Pilot full of Aviation knowledge and filthy rich from family front. He was more then friendly  with in inside and out side the cockpit.

Now Aircrafts, Hangers, Fuel, Tower were part of my life, instead of flak  and the normal high risk of Flying a plane. On my 2nd Solo cross country Flight  We moved into Merode Castle, about three or four miles from the town of Gale on the Gale Harber Roer River. The castle had been built in the  Middle Ages. It was surrounded by a moat, and had several stAircases leading up the circular towers  to the ramparts, where archers in centuries past had defended the castle. Nothing about  the area seemed particularly familiar to me, except that I knew I had flown several  missions to touch & Go my targets in this vicinity, especially during November. We were  there now making preparations for a major task to get my PPL asap. The photograph
below shows me in front of the main entrance to the heavily designed Hotels with swiming pool.

I was Flying at an altitude of 9000 ft given by Colombo Tower. [ Yes I was still under the range of  VHF Tower only ]

I am  doing hard for my Private Pilot Now. So I can Fly my Airplanes as Pilot In Command and carry  passengers too. To be eligible for a Private Pilot certificate, training process over a longer period of time.  More about that later. In general, the student Pilot must also be able to read, speak, write, and understand the English language.  The student's logbook will need to have certain endorsements in it regarding the student's readiness to take a "written" test as well as an "oral" and "practical" test by the instructor that actually taught the student. The instructor will also make sure the student has completed the Flight training and has the proper experience before allowing the student to take the "practical" test.

I am studying Principles of aerodynamics, powerplants, and Aircraft systems, Stall awareness, spin entry, spins, and spin recovery techniques  Aeronautical decision making and judgment and
PreFlight action that includes --
How to obtain information on runway lengths at Airports of intended use, data on takeoff and landing distances, weather reports and forecasts, and fuel requirements and
How to plan for alternatives if the planned Flight cannot be completed or delays are encountered.
The knowledge of Flight that the student will need to have before he can be issued a private pilot certificate would include the following;

PreFlight preparation
PreFlight procedures
Airport and seaplane base operations
Takeoffs, landings, and go-arounds
Performance maneuvers
Ground reference maneuvers
Slow Flight and stalls
Basic instrument maneuvers
Emergency operations
Night operations and
PostFlight procedures.

The actual Flight experience the student will need to have before he can be issued a private pilot certificate would include the following; At least 40 hours of Flight time that includes at least 20 hours of Flight training from an instructor and 10 hours of solo Flight training. The training must include at least
3 hours of cross-country Flight training in a single-engine Airplane
3 hours of night Flight training in a single-engine Airplane that includes --
One cross-country Flight of over 100 nautical miles total distance and
10 takeoffs and 10 landings to a full stop (with each landing involving a Flight in the traffic pattern) at an Airport.
3 hours of Flight training in a single-engine Airplane on the control and maneuvering of an Airplane solely by reference to instruments, including straight and level Flight, constant Airspeed climbs and descents, turns to a heading, recovery from unusual Flight attitudes, radio communications, and the use of navigation systems/facilities and radar services appropriate to instrument Flight
3 hours of Flight training in preparation for the practical test in a single-engine Airplane, which must have been performed within 60 days preceding the date of the test and 10 hours of solo Flight time in a single-engine Airplane, consisting of at least --

5 hours of solo cross-country time

One solo cross-country Flight of at least 150 nautical miles total distance, with full-stop landings at a minimum of three points, and one segment of the Flight consisting of a straight-line distance of at least 50 nautical miles between the takeoff and landing locations and
Three takeoffs and three landings to a full stop (with each landing involving a Flight in the traffic pattern) at an Airport with an operating control tower.
Generally speaking, this can not be accomplished in the minimum amount of 40 hours required by the regulations. The national average for training time before students take their private pilot check ride is about 65 hours.
I am a Private Pilot Now. I did so much to get it and I can Fly my Airplanes as Pilot In Command and carry my friends and family. I can see the world with different eye.
Even I can Fly my Srilankan girl friends too. Now moving to magestic City and liberty Plaza become very rare but still Solo parties of Foreign Pilots are there. Michale Bruce [ Mike ] had an amazing Solo party with an Airplane shape Cake. There was a competition of boozing and every Pilot was Flying in Alcho Sky except few Pilots like me, but we also enjoyed with amazing japanies food and soft drink. I got back home at 1230 in night and started next solo crass country  to Viravalla about 180 NM [ Nautical Miles ]. It was a part of my Pilot's life now, late Solo parties and early morning sorty.  Luckily I was not an
alcholic [ which is very common amoung Pilots ] So I could manage with small 5 hrs
sleep and a long cross country some times in Cessna 150 / 152 or Cessna 182.
Sky is the limit for others for me its my home now.  I am enjoying my Flying now. Its real  thrill to Fly these machines over sea and over land. Time also Flying with these Flying birds.

Now I am more confident Pilot as wel as my instructors also treating me like a Co Pilot,
no more a student Pilot.  I am doing lot of Cross country Flights to meet Civil Aviation Authority

5th June 1996
I am a Commercial Pilot Now and I can Fly my Airplanes as Pilot In Command and
carry passengers  and charge them.  I can join any Airlines or Charter Air  in the world.
Back home, every one was so happy in my family all my friends and family members
were there at Banglore Airport to receive me.  We had a Big party next day  at my
place where whole Banglore was present. Chief minister Of Karnataka offered me a
Job of his state Aircraft King Air C 90.  I felt bit insulting as I was in euphoria and wanted
to Fly Bigger birds of Airlines not for these Politician's Air plane.
Still I was polite enough to refuse his offer.

After my 8-9 months Pilot training I become 10 yrs mature now. Every one started treating me
like a Professional Pilot, I am no more a student though I am still just 20 yrs. Even Dad talking
me like an experienced person and my openion had a great value. In Dads office I am
no more a boss Ka Baba I am also called as Sir. This Pilot Training abroad made me so
mature and professional. I am a part of many importent decisions now. Even senior Engineers
and managers were waiting at Dad's office if they have some improtenet task to be finalise. Luckley
all my work was worth so far.

I set in Air India interviews and got selected as Trainee Co Pilot for Boeing 737 Aircraft.
At Air india I realise the importence of my tough training I got.  I was no 3 in list. 1 & 2nd
both were Son & daughters of Air India Commanders. They deserve to be there.  Its already
more then 2 years now still I am awaiting for Air India to call me and join.  i went back to Colombo
twice to get my all recency Flying done. Thanks to dad's business thats keep me
busy through out. Also I am enjoying too.  As I am making more money then Air india
commander siting at Home working part time for Dad's construction business at my own pace.
I also joind Banglore Flying Club to keep my Flying current. But I am forgettting Air india and I
believe Air India too.

Its almost more then 4 years now I did my CPL Flying and my Flying hrs increasing very slow
in log book as I hardly get time to go to BFC and Fly Cessna 152. But yes for my business trips
to shart distances I am using BFC Cessna to saving on Pilots salary and pay almost 50% of actual
charter Flight. Also one of my manager or Engineer  get a ride with me.  I Fly on cloud 7 on my business Flights.

Aviation boom is back in india and every Airlines needs Pilots now. I was 1st in race with all my
licences current and all more then double Flying hrs on my log book. I joined ModiLuft Airlines to Fly
AirBus 320 Aircraft this time. I have been selected for type rating at Tulus [ France ]
Capt Sonia from Delhi was my Sim partner, Sonia was  a daughter of a Modiluft Commander
she did her Flying from one of the Indian Flying club on Pushpak MK -I Aircraft. Her knowledge
was limited to take off and Landing back safely her Pushpak. she did her Multi Engine
training from Australia with about 50Hrs on Logbook and hardly 10 Hrs on Actual.
Our Simulator Instructor was a French Pilot Capt Claude Flix was a very tough Pilot
who hates Asian like any thing. It was a very rare combination of 3 different Pilots at
Tulus.  So we made many cresh landings at Simulator and got back home without any
type rating.  Going back to Modiluft was waste of time also my Business was also getting
suffer a lot.  But Capt Sonia got her type rating in Miami as her dad arranged all for her. She is
still Flying Airbus 320 on International Flights with 8000 hrs on Command.  I am married now with Hurefa with a 3 yrs old Kid Ranil who also enjoy my Flying when I Fly BFC Cessna.

Flying Bug never stop biting you if you are a true Aviator and Passionate Pilot. So its Aviation
boom again started and this time I joined a New Airline Paramaount Airways. ERJ all
Executive class Airplane. This ERJ-145 is Embraer's 50-passenger regional jet Airliner. The Aircraft first entered
service in 1996 and is operational with 27 Airlines worldwide. There are three variants
of the Aircraft: the 50-passenger ERJ-145 launched in 1989; a shorter fuselage
37-passenger ERJ-135 launched in 1997; and the medium-size 44-seat ERJ-140
launched in 1999.

The extended-range ERJ-145ER is the original version of the Aircraft which has a
range of 2,963km. The long-range ERJ-145LR, introduced in 1998, has a range of
3,037km. The extra long-range ERJ-145XR, with improved fuel efficiency and a
range of 3,704km, entered service with the launch customer, ExpressJet Airlines
of USA, in November 2002. ExpressJet has ordered 104 Aircraft with 100 options.
In May 2008, the ERJ-145 family received Russian certification, allowing operation
in Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States.  I can Fly this beautiful
machine too now.  I am back in India with type rating on this Aircraft too. Indian
DGCA is more happy if all Pilots are on ground. So it took almost 4 months before I
could get Indian Endorsement on my Indian CPL.   Indian Endorsement means just
a rubber stamp with Signature of a rude and very igoistic Indian DGCA officer, who
dosent know much about ERJ 145 even. I got my licence after 4 month with CRJ 120
endorsement. Unfortunately my Airlines dosent had any CRJ Aircraft otherwise its always
better to go abroad and get CRJ type rating rather sending licence back to DGCA. But i
had to sent for correction. I was fortunate enough to get my CPL back with correct
endorsement this time after 7 weeks of constant reminders and a small bribe of couple
of thousent rupees.

With all formalities I rushed to Paramaount Airways to meet HR Officer. I was informed
that due to shortage of Aircrafts and excess of Pilots I have to wait for next 4- 6 months
time.  Airlines would inform me well before induction time to start my Suppy Flying.
I saw as much as 15 other Co Pilots were waiting at HR office.  Its almost 2 years now
we all are awaiting for Airlines to call us to do joining formalities. But I  heard the Airlines
is Flying on ventilator with its last Aircraft left in fleet of 14 odd ERJ 145.

Thank God I am still Flying BFC Cessna 172 now with my Engineer and managers.
